Hanshiro is a ronin samurai, making his living as a free-lance "private investigator" since the overthrow of his lord's house. He is employed to recover "Cat", the illegitimate daughter of Lord Asano, who defiantly joined the House of the Perfumed Lotus after her father's death, but flees after narrowly escaping an attempt on her life.

Hanshiro tracks Lady Asano along the Tokaido Road, stretching from Edo to Kyoto, where each learns to respect their opponent, and learns to appreciate the difficulties of those outside their social classes.

If you liked Shogun, you will find a similar pleasure from Tokaido.
