A story of teen love and friendship which is an easy read but not altogether lightweight. I haven't yet seen the TV adaptation, but I think the plotline diverges from this considerably.

Thank you angela!

I like Ms Burchill more than her ex-hubby Tony Parsons (but that wouldn't be hard) so am sure that this will be well written.

I loved the series on telly too so have been wanting to read the original story for a while now.

Exceedingly enjoyable book; Julie Burchill captures the way teenage girls think and act very well (although I'm not a lesbian so can't comment on those bits).

As the bio says, she was an NME journo at a tender age; what it doesn't say that she later had an affair with the younger Charlotte Raven and is now in a blissful relationship with Raven's brother.

Well, why not?

My only problem with the book is that it was so trendy when it was written it seems already to be quite out of date.

I also had offputting flashes of Julie Burchill crouched over her PC like an old witch bashing out these exciting descriptions of teenagers rampaging around Brighton.

The ending seemed uncharacteristically soppy and a bit rushed which was a shame and lets the book down a bit in my humble opinion.

This is very different from the TV adaptation which I enjoyed; yes, it does diverge considerably from this original story.

Thanks for the chance to read this, constantweader!

To say that I have issues with Julie Burchill is like saying that Ian Paisley has issues with Catholics - however, I do think she's a good writer despite making me want to kill her from time to time ('Why Dawn French Should Lose Weight' was a particular unfavourite of mine). I don't quite know what to expect from this, which is delightful. Hmmm!

Arg, arg, arg, Julie Burchill....on the one hand, her strong, punchy prose zooms through the awkwardnesses and tragicomedy of adolescence and first love brilliantly. On the other, Sugar is depicted with what amounts to almost hatred. While Kim is supposedly sympathising with Sugar's uneducated ignorance (though laughing at it constantly), Sugar is seen through Kim's eyes as insensitive, shallow, selfish and stupid, her only redeeming feature being her attractiveness. Kim seems to have almost a nineteenth century attitude towards her - attraction to the open sexuality but repulsed by its whorish qualities. And the end! Ugh! Kim retreats into nice middle class respectability after seeing Sugar be too coarse and nasty after all, and there's even a totally improbable twist, so that they all fit into a nice Happy Ending. I can't believe that Sugar would take that road at all, or that Kim and Saint would take what is supposedly theirs. I'm left, as usual with JB, thinking that she's a terrific writer who can't help trying to be cool and shocking, breaking out of the middle class Daily-Mailishness which she secretly loves. 'Explicit content' indeed - the camera practically swings to a metaphorical shot of a crackling fire whenever anything threatens to get actually hot. In the end, Julie Burchill is, to use one of her own words, a sadult, and it shows throughout this blaze of a novel that delights in quenching itself.

This was picked up at the Manchester meet this morning. I have never seen the T.V version because I think I was either at work or on earlies so had to be in bed (poor me) Hubbie watched the T.V version and declared it good. Time to try the book which was sat quite innocently on the swap table.

If the truth be out, I was bored by this book! It is already a little outdated with references to a pop singer(?)Samantha Mumba who has already vanished without trace.

The warning on the front of 'Explicit Content' must be aimed at a 7 year old IMO - there is no explicit content over the mention of a spliff, a bit of vodka-redbull and maybe a glimpse of thigh chucked in for good measure.

The story started off well with Kim's home life and private school background. This sadly was the highlight of a book that went downhill from there on in. The end was a bit rushed and seemed to be a hastily thought out conclusion, by an author who was probably just as bored of the plot as I was.
