Paul's Pass-Along Book #2098
Clare Ostler
FALLING UP was presented to my class of second graders at Oakcrest Elementary in West Jordan, Utah by Paul's mother.
We love reading poems by Shel Silverstein. I predict the poem called "Crazy Dream" where a student trades places with his unfortunate teacher will be the class favorite.
My own favorite is called "Scale," and anyone who weighs over 125 pounds will embrace this poem.

I am the V.I.P. in Mrs. Ostler's class this week. This is one of my favorite books, and I have my own copy of Falling Up as a part of my V.I.P. display. I read some of my favorite poems from the book to the class. Everyone laughed a lot because the poems are so funny and so are the pictures.

During the first part of January, Oakcrest Eagles developed poetry reading and writing skills. We used the funny poems in FALLING UP as models.
Recently, Oakcrest Eagles did a special reading project. Each student selected a book and read it aloud to another child in our class; a student from kindergarten, first, second, and fourth grade; a staff or faculty member; and his own family. It was lots of fun and gave Oakcrest Eagles great oral reading practice.
"Tan" selected this book for the project. Here are the comments he recorded:
kindergarten student.. "He likd the powams I read."
Eli in 4th grade..."He said no coment."
2nd grade student "He liked the part were she smild to the wrolld and the wrold smild along side of her."
Mr. Gallager P.E. specialist "He sed you are a good reader and I love the book."

Bubbles is a second grade girl in Mrs. Ostler's class. The last week of July,
she read poems from this book to her grandmother. Grandmother enjoyed listening to Bubbles read the funny poems. Grandmother was visiting from out-of-state, and mistakenly took the book with her when she left Utah. She mailed the book back to Bubbles recently, and it's on the class shelf again. Grandmother sends her appreciation to Bubbles' teacher and to Paul Ostler's family.
