Thanks Ian - again, apologies for the delay in journalling!
I would have given this book an 8 if it hadn't been for the title (uninspired) and the first section (tedious). Part two I enjoyed the most - moving and exciting. The third part started well, but then lost momentum and seemed to contemplate its own navel for the last 50 pages, which was disappointing. The characters were a bit two-dimensional and could have done with a bit more fleshing out, and not one of them evoked any sympathy whatsoever. However, as a portrait of the changing lives and relationships of a group of people over three decades it worked quite well. The detailed descriptions of the artworks did bring them to life and were interesting, even if I wasn't sure if they progressed the story.
