I Remember...
1 journaler for this copy...
Kevin Kammeraad, the author of this delightful collection of poems, came to visit my school a few weeks ago. He is a talented writer and performer who really sparked an interest in writing with the students and teachers in my building.
I enjoy this book in particular because it reminds me to think back to all the crazy things kids really do. And, because I am a mere 4 months older than Kevin, his childhood is much like mine.
One of my favorite poems, the second one in the book, is about "Inspector Gadget," one of the best cartoons of all time. As I read this poem and pondered the lack of a face for Dr. Claw, I was reminded of my own childhood obsession with The Smurfs.
On The Smurfs, there was this thing called "The Dance of a Hundred Smurfs," which led me to believe there were at least one hundred of those blue guys running around Smurf Village. So, I grabbed a sheet of paper and started keeping a list of all of all the smurfs I encountered every Saturday morning. And, you know what? There were at least 40 nameless smurfs running around. How disappointing that they didn't warrant introduction.
I hope Kevin's book of poems inspires you to think about your own childhood... :)
