Thank you! Another book for my insane "I-want-to-read-the-entire-Booker-shortlist" project...
Very enjoyable read, beautifully written and a moving story. Ishiguro is very subtle, very understated in his narration, just hovering around his characters at a distance sometimes, never completely entering their lives, always keeping them somewhat of a mystery - even, at times, to themselves. This inevitably makes them all the more tragic. I found Masuji Ono a remarkably similar kind of man to Stevens in The Remains Of The Day - both are men struggling to make sense of the choices they made in their lives and how those choices fit into the world that they now find themselves in. Very nice piece of writing. Thanks for sharing.
Mailed off to darkpunkangel today as her "Indecisive" book for April...sshhh, it's a surprise...
Thank you so much for the book, look forward to reading it!
Pretty decent read, probably read another book by this author.
RES for msjoanna who took this out of the Everybook VBB on bookobsessed.

Looking forward to reading this. I read and enjoyed A Pale View of Hills last year by this author. I've also read Never Let Me Go, though somehow managed not to read The Remains of the Day (though I finally have a copy of Remains on my TBR stack.
I keep reading Ishiguro's books and keep enjoying them, but none other than Remains of the Day has really seemed to fulfill its potential. The slow reveal of the narrator's story surrounded by wonderfully strong writing makes these books enticing. But often, at the end, I feel like I missed some vital piece of the story that would make it all come together.
Here, the narrator is an artist who fancies himself quite an important member of society. In the late 1940s, the artist is reflecting on his past work promoting imperialist Japan during the war. The images of Japanese society and Japan in these post war years were quite compelling. But the message--that Japan must apologize to the world for its imperialist actions--came through as moralizing to the point that it nearly overwhelmed the book for me.
Highly recommended to fans of Ishiguro looking to read more of his work, but probably not the place to start if you haven't read his other books.

Sent as a RABCK to HI77 along with some other books headed that way. Enjoy!
