Crossing the Burn follows a teenage boy through his formative years in the northern Georgia mountains in the 1950s. There is particular emphasis on the role of elderly neighbors in shaping his values and outlook, but there are also numerous adventures and incidents involving teenage peers. The book is a fictionalized version of the author's own experiences, and many of the events portrayed in it actually happened.
