This is a troubling story of crime, sin, guilt, punishment and expiation, set in the rigid moral climate of the 17th century New England. The young mother of an illegitimate child confronts her Puritan judges.

However, it is not so much her harsh sentence, but the cruelties of slowly exposed guilt as her lover is revealed, that hold the reader enthralled all the way to the book's poignat climax.

Finally I have read the story and it was boring. People back then in the 18th century wrote in an elaborate style which I find unattractive. the story itself does not really have a good climax, except for the fact, that the minister dies shortly before the end, almost immediately after he finally (!) confessed his love with Hester Prynne. The whole story took 200 pages, but it is not worth it... (at least not to me)
