From the back:
Quoyle is a hapless, hopeless hack journalist living and working in New York. When his no-good wife is killed in a spectacular road accident, Quoyle heads for the land of his forefathers - the remotest corner of far flung Newfoundland. With 'the aunt' and his delinquent daughters - Bunny and Sunshine - in tow, Quoyle finds himself a part of an unfolding, exhilarating Atlantic drama. The Shipping News is an irresistible comedy of human life and possibility.

Finished this book last night. It was interesting, it took me a while to get into it, you have to get used to how the Newfoundlander's (pronounced new-fin-land-ers for the non canadians) and the main character wasn't someone I liked. Overall, it felt to me like the book had no purpose. I did enjoy it, but I wonder, again, about books that win pulitzer Prizes.

I've just noticed I didn't journal this when it arrived - sorry, it's safe and sound, but it arrived in that crazy post-NY holiday time and it must have slipped through the cracks. I'm about 2/3 through, so hope to be finshed in the next week. Enjoying it, thanks and sorry.

My sister said this was a great book, and reminded her of some of our family. Oh well, I guess we can have different tastes. I had a hard time getting into this book, but once I was about halfway through, found that between lunch time reading sessions I'd wonder what was in store for the main character. The blurb on back said something about it being "an irresistible comedy of human life and possibility". Comedy? I really didn't find it all that funny. There were a few quietly humourous moments, but nothing to guffaw about. That said, I did enjoy the book in that it became a quietly interesting story. I think the ending was a bit pat. Would have liked to have read more of the courtship/engagement/wedding that was summed up in the last chapter, and I guess that's important as obviously I grew to care about these characters and wanted to read more about them. So in that sense it was a good book.

I think my sister had to be referring to my father as he was always a very quiet man with a quiet but witty sense of humour. Hard to know and understand, but if you can reach the stage of understanding, you get the jokes. Sadly I never really got the quiet jokes.

Anyway, on a brighter note, I shall pass this book onto Melanie2474 as soon as I have her address, and will include a brand new bookmark for her to keep or pass on with the book to it's next reader. Her choice!

Received this back from flitterby a couple of weeks ago, it has been hidden in the kitchen under a pile of goodness knows what sort of junk! Melanie2474 had asked to be skipped from the ring, so it's back home again. Thanks everyone for taking part, will let you know my views in due course...
