Reciever has taken a long time to journal it, and will probably take longer to read it as she has several rings/rays to go through but has stuck a 'Chocolate drives me sane' post it on the front to remind her to return in due course ...

This kept getting buried under more recent acquisitions and, having read it, I wish I had got round to it sooner.
Although it is all written in English, the speech patterns usually make it clear which language (Afrikaans, English or Zulu) is in use without making speakers of the other languages sound as if they are uneducated or speaking pidgin - rather as Alexander McCall Smith has done more recently for (I assume) Tswana - and there are some lovely constructions in Zulu: 'Is it heavy?' for news, 'Stay well' being a reply to 'Go well' will stay with me.
There is poetry in the description and reflections as well as in the tale. It starts as a threnody for the integrity of rural life and ends as a quiet song of hope, an acknowledgement that the resurrection occurs in the heart and faith of individuals.
