I didnt like the other Shreve book I read which was The Pilot's Wife and didnt want to read her books again despite the huge number to choose from and her devoted fan base. This was great though, and I should try her other titles.
About a 12yr old girl and her Dad who live alone after the death of their mother/wife and baby sister/daughter in an horrific car accident. He relocates them to a small town and basically goes into shutdown on his life and emotions and feelings and she has no choice but to abide by their newfound silent existence while facing puberty and adolescence etc etc. Then when out walking in the woods one night they find an abandoned newborn baby in the snow, apparently left to die. They rescue her and thus unfolds the pain of old wounds re-opening and emotions brought to the surface that cant be ignored and basically just dealing with the tragedy of their pasts when confronted by similar sentiment in their present.
