A thriller about global warming! I was hoping HAARP would be included but it wasn't. It seems like Michael Crichton does not believe in global warming solely because of a little something called eugenics. I can understand why Crichton may think that the media is over hyping global warming for the government's own means, but I think eugenics is a separate issue from global warming. Eugenics really must have effected him somehow in order for him to not believe anything else he is told.
Interesting story: I was discussing this book with my grandmother and we were talking about how the media may make global warming a big deal just to instill fear within people -- to keep them in line. I also talked about the book 1984 by George Orwell. The next day I was reading the book and pages 451-460 pretty much mentions all of the stuff I was talking about with my grandma. Then this professor says "Insanity! No one remembers even a few years ago! George Orwell. No memory!" I thought that was very funny.
Also, why would the lead character, a lawyer, be the person to save the US from terrorist attacks? There were a few secretaries saving the world too. I find it hard to believe that the government would even mention these things were happening to a lawyer and some secretaries. I'm pretty sure that they have people who are trained to protect their country... you know, someone who has actually used a gun before.

And finished on 12/29 just in time for the new year. I'm not sure if I liked the book. It was quite preachy, and very awkwardly (lengthily) inserted Crichton's personal views into the story. The changes in scenery were entertaining and I enjoyed the plotting and action in the Antarctic-ice crevasse and Arizona/New Mexico Canyon-lightning-flood sequences, but the tropical island-cannibalism-crocodile-tsunami sequence was just too over the top. And by the end of the novel I got very tired of the plot taking a secondary position to Crichton's personal soap box.
But if you've never heard or read about the case against the theory of global warming, it is a good read, just to get a new perspective on a world issue, whether you agree with it or not.
