A brilliant, surprising novel about a woman who finds herself pregnant in the early 1960s, and decides, almost despite herself, to ignore the stigma of being the single mother of an illegitimate baby -- only to find that her life is amazingly, almost miraculously transformed by the birth of her child. Having read several depressing 19th and early 20th century novels about young women whose lives are destroyed by having fallen pregnant (Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Summer by Edith Wharton) this novel was a revelation to me. It shows that becoming a mother doesn't mean your life as an independent woman has to come to an end!
