The daughter of a diplomat disappears on a school field trip - lured into the Santa Monica mountains and killed in cold blood. Her father denies the possibility of a political motive. There are no signs of struggle, no evidence of sexual assault, leaving psychologist Alex Delaware and his friend LAPD homicide detective Milo Sturgis to pose the disturbing quesiton: why?

As usual, this is another of Kellerman's good books.

Ooh! Ooh! An Alex Delaware novel I haven't read! Thanks, RealBookWorm, I look forward to reading it. Eventually. Maybe by next spring, judging from the looks of my TBR shelves....

Stayed home from work today sick, so I took the opportunity to read this Alex Delaware/Milo Sturgis novel in between naps and medicine. Kellerman seems to have made Delaware somewhat more mellow and approachable. I remember the character from previous novels as being awfully self-righteous and "above the fray." I suppose that's the clinical detachment he cultivates as a psychologist. Sturgis's character seems to have no inner life anymore, which is a shame, because I like him more than I like the good doctor.

At any rate, the story involves the murders of several handicapped individuals in the Los Angeles area. On the surface, they seem unconnected. But gradually the lines between them become more clear and a conspiracy emerges from some unexpected places. Daniel Shavari, an Israeli detective from Kellerman's novel THE BUTCHER'S THEATER, makes an appearance as he assists Sturgis and Delaware in solving the case. A fast-reading, engaging story. Enjoyable, and not too gruesome.

Promised to StlMoMom, as soon as I find her address.
