The characters disappointed me in this book...I can see what the author is trying to portray - love in its most innocent form blossoming under the tutelage of an "older woman" who isn't innocent at all - or is she? Anyway, another Oprah pick disappointment.

This book was given to me by a fellow book crosser who thought I would enjoy it. I have just started it and am reading this one as well as two other books that I have on the go depending on which mood I'm in.
Okay now it's much later and I have forced myself to finish this poor excuse of a book. I think the cover says it all. " A formally beautiful, disturbing and finally morally devastating novel." This book was so boring and impossible. Would anyone really choose being accused of Nazi war crimes and imprisonment over being exposed as an iliterate?
The only thing good about this book was the cover.
