Object Lessons is a coming-of-age story about a girl from what passed, in the 1950's, for a "mixed marriage" -- between an upper class Irish man and a working class Italian woman. The girl grows to understand herself and her relationship with her mother and her friends.

One True Thing is a story of an ambitious young woman, guilt-tripped by her father into coming home to care for her dying mother. After spending months learning how to have a relationship with her mom and caring for her through the agonizing last months of terminal cancer, she is accused of killing her. Did she do it, or was it her dad?

Black and Blue is about a woman who leaves her abusive husband, who is a policeman, and disappears with her young son. It deals with the fears she feels that he will find her and finally kill her, and her difficulties in dealing with her son's ambivalence about his father.

All three are well-written with huge emotional impact.
