The TV series of Hornblower was pretty fantastic and the book it was based on isn't bad either.
It's about a young man who joins the navy at a time when England was battling France for colonies, and has great adventures. He's always trying to act corageously and this is probably why 'Mr Midshipman Hornblower' was one of Winston Churchill's favourite books. (Winston Churchill had quite a few adventures in his time too)
I recommended it, but you will come accross people who don't like it because it wasn't written contemporaneously.
