This is a book about loss and triumph, a great grief and a greater love. Gordon Livingston is a local psychiatrist who lost two sons in the course of a year: one to suicide, the other, Lucas, to acute myelocytic leukemia. On the 18th of March, 1992, an editorial appeared in The Baltimore Sun requesting prayers for Lucas' health in the light of a pending bone marrow transplant. This was my reply; the illustration was done some years later.

Lucas Scott Livingston died in mid-Spring (May), 1992, at the age of six, in the pediatric oncology ward of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Requiescat in pace.
