My friend Kerri Sue gave me this book to read, and we both agreed: well written but quite depressing. I like the author's sparse, unadorned prose; I was reminded a little bit of both Ernest Hemingway and Raymond Chandler. I was also fascinated to learn a bit more about Afghanistan and its history before and during the reign of the Taliban. However...this book is not for the weak of heart. There are some wrenching scenes of violence and cruelty, a great deal of it directed toward children. I was happy that the book ends on a hopeful not, but all in all, if you are looking to find a little happiness or sunshine in your reading life, this book is definitely NOT for you.
