The Back of the Book
'The Trumpet-Major' gives us a perfect picture of Dorset in the year 1804, when King George III went holidaying at Weymouth with his German wife and numerous offspring, while all Europe went in fear of 'the Corsican Ogre' and in the English countryside old men were drilled, pikes were stored in churches and the King's dragoons watered their horses at Miller Loveday's millpond. The miller and his two sons, John the Trumpet-Major and Bob the sailor, together with the Widow Garland and her daughter Anne, are the characters around whom the story revolves in a novel which displays to the full Hardy's genius for the depiction of rural atmosphere and character.
'The Trumpet-Major' first appeared in 1880 as a serial in 'Good Words' and was published the same year in three volumes.
