Stranger in a Strange Land, winner of the 1962 Hugo Award, is the story of Valentine Michael Smith, born during, and the only survivor of, the first manned mission to Mars. Michael is raised by Martians, and he arrives on Earth as a true innocent: he has never seen a woman and has no knowledge of Earth's cultures or religions. But he brings turmoil with him, as he is the legal heir to an enormous financial empire, not to mention de facto owner of the planet Mars. With the irascible popular author Jubal Harshaw to protect him, Michael explores human morality and the meanings of love. He founds his own church, preaching free love and disseminating the psychic talents taught him by the Martians. Ultimately, he confronts the fate reserved for all messiahs.

The impact of Stranger in a Strange Land was considerable, leading many children of the 60's to set up households based on Michael's water-brother nests. Heinlein loved to pontificate through the mouths of his characters, so modern readers must be willing to overlook the occasional sour note ("Nine times out of ten, if a girl gets raped, it's partly her fault."). That aside, Stranger in a Strange Land is one of the master's best entertainments, provocative as he always loved to be. Can you grok it?

Absolutely brilliant story, loved reading this, I grokked it so much! Passed this on the KT-J.

Journal Entry 8 by KT-J on Friday, June 22, 2007
Stubee passed this on to me and I started reading it on holiday. I'm finding it a bit hard going in places but it's definitely interesting!

Journal Entry 9 by KT-J on Monday, July 2, 2007
Well, I'm not sure I completely grokked it! I liked the beginning and I liked the end and I enjoyed the general storyline, but I got a bit bogged down in the middle of it and found it a bit hardgoing in places.

It's a good book in that it brings up a lot of theological and philosophical issues and it was interesting to read as the concept is quite incredible, I just found it hard work at times!

Thanks lauraloo29 for including me in the bookring! Have PMd kizmiaz so will send this on once I have their address.

Edit: 10/07/2007 - this was posted to kizmiaz today.

It never ceases to amaze me, when I go back and read these older Sci-Fi books, how little they are about outer space and how much they tell us about ourselves, as a clumsy species who can’t help but screw up over and over again. I had this happen to me a couple of times with Ray Bradbury’s books and now with this most valuable classic book.
It’s called sci-fi because it has a “Man from Mars” in it, but it deals with religious, philosophical and sociological thoughts and ideas, as well as reflections on divinity and the media manipulation and on corruption and the power of intimidation, a lot of food for thought, besides being a well written story you can enjoy. To grok it completely is probably not easy and each of us groks what we can of it.
It’s very easy to get involved in the story and then just pause the reading and ponder a couple of ideas that the author throws in the mix, in fact this happened to me a couple of times and I had to pull myself out of my reverie and force myself to get on with the reading or I’d never finish it.
I had a great time reading it, as you can probably tell by now, and the good thing about it is that it stays with you after you’re done.
Thank you very much lauraloo29 for this chance.
Sent to The Netherlands today (25.07.2007).

I finally finished this book. It was a strugle and took a long time. Maybe I didn't grok it. And maybe therefore I couldn't appreciate it. But you can't read good books all the time. Pity, because it is a classic. Hopefully the next reader will enjoy it more. It already is on its way to Finland.

Journal Entry 14 by wingAnneliswing from Kerava, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Wednesday, October 24, 2007
And to Finland it arrived yesterday. In the 70's I used to read all scifi books I could get my hands on. But I did not see this then. Now I have my opportunity read this book. Thank you!

Journal Entry 15 by wingAnneliswing from Kerava, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Wednesday, January 2, 2008
This book is the most famous classical Scifi-book which has not been translated into Finnish. It should have been done long ago!
Thank you for the possibility to read this book, Lauraloo and others! I loved the book.

I sent a new PM to Nine-Mile for her address. Maybe the first one got lost. I hope to get the address this time.

A week later: Still no answer from Nine-Mile. I'll try Ariesgirl29 this time.

Going in well traveled bookbox as an extra since there's room - enjoy!

Journal Entry 18 by guinaveve from Mason, Ohio USA on Friday, April 25, 2008
This came to me in my Well Traveled Bookbox. I don't read sci-fi often, but every so often a storyline will just grab me. After reading the back cover of this book and the reviews by fellow BCers, this sounds like it could be a captivating read. I look forward to reading it.

Journal Entry 19 by guinaveve from Mason, Ohio USA on Wednesday, December 10, 2008
I really liked the storyline and idea of this book, but I was just not into the narrative voice. Jubal and Ben talked like PIs in a bad detective novel and the book was narrated as such frequently. I was interested at the beginning of the book, bored with the middle, and the end was okay.
I am going to leave this at my OBCZ tomorrow.
