One of the world's great novels, Les Miserables burst onto the French literary scene in 1862 during the tumultuous years of the ill-fated reign of Napoleon III. It is the story of Jean Valjean, one of teh most memorable characters in all fiction. Released after 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread, Valjean now seeks to redeem his life by helping others, particularly the owly prostitute Fantine and her Daughtr, cosette. At the same time Valjean is doggedly pursued by police inspector Javert.
