From the front cover flap:

"Cases never go cold. Not for some people."

The death of a teenaged girl almost two decades ago comes back to haunt L.A.--and Detective Harry Bosch--in this spellbinding new thriller from New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly.

In Los Angeles in 1988, a sixteen-year-old gilr disappeared from her home and was later found dead of a gunshot wound to the chest. The death appeared at first to be a suicide--but some of the evidence contradicted that scenario, and detectives came to believe this was in fact a murder. Despite a by-the-book investigation, no one was ever charged.

Now Detective Harry Bosch is back with the LAPD with the sole mission of closing unsolved cases, and this girl's murder is the first he's given. A DNA match makes the case very much alive again, and it turns out to be anything but cold. The aftershocks from this death have destroyed at least two other lives, and everywhere he probes, Bosch finds hot grief, hot rage, and a bottomless well of betrayal and malice.

And it's not just the girl's family and friends whose lives Bosch is stirring up afresh. With each new development, Harry Bosch finds increasing resistance from within the police force itself. Old enemies are close at hand. Even as he pushes relentlessly to find the truth, Bosch has to wonder if this assignment was intended to be his last. Digging up the past may heal old wounds--or it may expose new, searing ones.

A good, tight, gritty detective novel. This was well-written and carried just enough details to stun the reader at the end without pulling the killer out of thin air. Excellent beach-reading.

I usually like Michael Connelly's book, so it is not a surprise that I liked this one. Sometimes - like in "Chasing the dime" - the ending is maybe a little bit to far-fetched, but this is not the case in this one. In summary, a really good Michael Connelly.
Since I haven't read all Harry Bosh mysteries, I couldn't really place this book in the chronology. I don't remember a book at the end of which Harry Bosh took a retirement, and I haven't read any other book where he is a "closer". Is this one of the most recent Harry Bosh mysteries? Maybe Kleptokitty - to whom I am going to send this book - will be able to answer to my question...

Update (October 10, 2005): mailed to Kleptokitty today.

Fabulous! I'd forgotton this one was on it's way (I must have a dreadful memory!) & it was a brilliant suprise. Michael Connelly is one of my favourite authors, so thank you very much indeed. I'm off to update my wishlist!

As ever, this was a brilliant read. Harry Bosch is one of my favourite detectives and Michael Connelly one of my favourite authors.

Kundri, I'm sorry but I'm a bit hazy on the timelines too. I seem to remember in one of the Bosch novels I've read that he was working outside of the LAPD, recovering from an operation and living on a boat ... but I can't remember which one!! One of thes reasons I love these books so much is because they completely grip me at the time & I race through them without being able to put them down. Of course the downside of this is that I can't remember a thing about them a few weeks later :-(

Thankyou to you both for sharing this one. I'll be passing it on in due course, but haven't decided on a release location yet.

Brilliant book, found it on holiday. I'm a fan of crime writing but hadn't read any of Michael Connelly's work until now. I was so gripped by the fluid story that I couldn't put it down and finished it in 2 days! ........ just read other journal entries and totally agree - can't wait to find and read more about Harry Bosch.
