I got this book second-hand at Cat's Whiskers, an English book shop in Nice, France.

This book really didn't do it for me. I don't understand how a book full of so much action can be so boring. The book's premise seemed promising, but I didn't like Ballard's writing, I wasn't held by what he had to say about terrorism and class structure and people trying to find meaning in their lives today, and I didn't believe his justifications for characters' action. Plus, the book sort of presents itself as a whodunit but we can pretty much guess who did it from the get go.

I finished this book while laying naked in the sun on the Côte d'Azur and handed this book off to the guy laying next to me.

I was on the beach at St. Laurent d'Eze, one of the most beautiful nude beaches I've ever been to. I laid out my towel next to the hottest guy on the beach, assuming he was French. I wasn't trying to pick him up per se, but my intentions weren't totally puerile either.

I was reading a book called "Oh the Glory of It All," by Sean Wilsey, and he was reading something else but I didn't see the title. He'd spoken to another guy near us, in perfect French it seemed to me, which confirmed my suspicions of his nationality. Obviously, my American ear could still stand some training, because he finally leaned over and said "Do you read English?" in an accent that didn't sound remotely like a French person.

He was Canadian, from Montreal. He gave me the book, even though he said he didn't much care for it. I accepted, gladly, and we talked some more. We both have boyfriends, it was quickly established, his down the way in Nice and mine across the globe in LA. I ended up saying way too much about an ongoing drama with my guy and me, and then became self-conscious because of it.

The sun was setting, and I took off - book in backpack.

Honestly, the novel doesn't sound like my cup of tea either. Maybe I'll read a bit to see if it turns me on, and pass it on again if it doesn't. In any case, I hope I see the guy again. I'm leaving town soon though, so it's not likely.
