Skipping Christmas

What a lovely cover. An unknown John Grisham, not even captured by Hollywood, what a surprise.
I have read it now, in the sweltering heat, because bookcrosser summerbreeze was interested in this title for a trade.
I found the story depressing and irritating, but then again I am not very much into John Grisham and not into suburbian American life, either. What a strange story. Mind you, there are some spoilers here. Don't read on.
What starts as peer pressure to the brink of terrorizing and, as the daughter correctly states it, mindless consumerism (whith all the planet-threatening consequences, I might add) finally results in the triumph of conformity, disguised as endearing loyalty. I did not like that one bit. Nor the attitude of the daughter, who first seems happy to be away from the materialism and then decides that her fiancee is going to love to be exposed to it. Oh, he studied in Europe! Oh, and he isn't dark-skinned after all! What a relief! What an easy way out. Sigh.

Yippee....I am so excited. I received this today. I can hardly wait to begin reading it. It may actually be close to Christmas time with the rings I have just received emails from in the past week. Also, based on the lovely post card, we are having a very soggy summer here in BC. It feels like winter already :(
