I'm reading this for a bookring and loved it so much I just downloaded the unabridged audio version from audible.com and may send it out on a few travels. It's about 15 CD's long.

From Amazon.com:
This clever and inventive tale works on three levels: as an intriguing science fiction concept, a realistic character study and a touching love story. Henry De Tamble is a Chicago librarian with "Chrono Displacement" disorder; at random times, he suddenly disappears without warning and finds himself in the past or future, usually at a time or place of importance in his life. This leads to some wonderful paradoxes. From his point of view, he first met his wife, Clare, when he was 28 and she was 20. She ran up to him exclaiming that she'd known him all her life. He, however, had never seen her before. But when he reaches his 40s, already married to Clare, he suddenly finds himself time travelling to Clare's childhood and meeting her as a six-year-old. The book alternates between Henry and Clare's points of view, and so does the narration. Reed ably expresses the longing of the one always left behind, the frustrations of their unusual lifestyle, and above all, her overriding love for Henry. Likewise, Burns evokes the fear of a man who never knows where or when he'll turn up, and his gratitude at having Clare, whose love is his anchor. The expressive, evocative performances of both actors convey the protagonists' intense relationship, their personal quirks and their reminiscences, making this a fascinating audio.

This book has now officially become a Bookray!

What is a bookray and how do I get in on it? (thanks go to PHC for her detailed instructions which helped me greatly in understanding the process)

A bookray begins when a bookcrosser decides to send a book on a controlled journey. A list of interested readers is set up and the book passes from one reader who reads it and then sends it along to the person next in line. The final person on the list will set the book "free" or pass it along to other interested readers. A reader can join a bookray at any time unless I decide to close it (if that happens I will make a note that the ray has closed). Just private message (PM) me and let me know where you are located (city, state & country) and if you are able to ship internationally. Also let me know if you would like to be placed lower down on the list.

What should I do when I receive the book? Log on to bookcrossing and type up a journal entry so I know it reached you okay. Then private message (PM) the next person in line to get their mailing address so there will be no waiting once you finish the book, if they do not respond within 10 days PM the next reader in line (and me too so I know they are no longer interested). Please read the book within 30 days and when complete add another journal entry with your thoughts about the book. Tell me the truth! Was it the best thing you ever read or a complete and utter waste of time? I love to talk books, the good, the bad and even the ugly (ugly can sometimes be lots of fun to dissect), you can write one sentence or a hundred. When you finish send the book along to the next reader in line. Please mail the book via Media Mail to save on postage in the US or surface mail if sending overseas.

What if I'm the last in line? Journal upon arrival, listen, journal again with your thoughts & set them free or pass along to a friend.

Help! I'm too swamped with book commitments and it is almost my turn! If you find yourself in this situation PM me and I will bump you down a few notches on the list (if possible). Believe me, I understand!

Thanks for participating and for reading this tome if you have made it this far.

Please PM me if would like to be added to the list or have any questions about the book or the bookray!

I'm surprised it took me so long to finish this, but I really enjoyed it! It was an original concept, beautifully told, with realistic and immensely enjoyable characters. And what a love story! My heart breaks for Henry and Clare that they are so wonderful together but stuck at the mercy of particularly odd fates. I can't believe this was Niffenegger's first book.
I also really enjoyed the reading. It was a good idea to have 2 characters, one male one female, for Henry and Clare. I particularly enjoyed Clare's voice. When she is reading as a child her whole tone changes and it adds to the story.
Off to sharalsbooks in tomorrows mail.

Journal Entry 6 by sharalsbooks from Mesa, Arizona USA on Wednesday, July 13, 2005
Received today. Thanks for including me. I look forward to posting again when I am done to share my thoughts.

I have had no response from Sundreamy2 for an address and FamFatale has asked to be skipped. Contacting tnkbl today for mailing address.

Must be my mood but I can't focus on the story so I am passing the book on to keep the ring moving.
