Originally published in 1970 and just as good now in 2005. I had this book for a number of years and just couldn't get past the first few chapters, finally gave it away. My sister read another of Morrisons books and raved about it so when I found this at the library bookstore I thought I'd give it another try. This time I almost read it straight through in one sitting - absolutely excellent.
Set in the late 1920's in rural Kentucky it's the story of Pecola Breedlove, in her words a very ugly black girl. She prays for her eyes to turn blue so that she will be beautiful, so that people will look at her, so that her world will be different. This is the story of the nightmare at the heart of her yearning, and the tragedy of its fulfillment.
Will definately read more of Toni Morrisons books!
