[From back cover]
"Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community.
When Jonas turns twelve he is singled out to recieve special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now it's time for Jonas to recieve the truth. There is no turning back."

Nice surprise in my mailbox!
Looking forward to this Lois Lowry book - written for children/young adults - but with meaning for everyone, I've heard.

Thanks so much, literarylover!

Though this is an award-winning children's book, it just wasn't for me.
Plan to release at our local Meet-up tomorrow - for someone else to enjoy!

I picked this up at tonight's meeting.

I think this is a book more for adults (though writen in in the form of a children's story). It is covers the same themes and concerns as Atwoods's Handmaid's Tale but doesn't give the same satisifying glimpse backwards upon the enclosed community that the main character strives to escape.

Thanks caligula03!
My teacher read this to the class in year six and I remember really enjoying it. I've thought back on it a number of times since then, and I'm looking foward to re-reading it.

Finished reading this a while ago now, but I forgot to journal it at the time.
I pretty much knew that I'd enjoy it as it's not my first encounter with this book, but I'd forgotten about a lot of the smaller details. Although intended for teenagers and young adults, it's a fascinating book for older readers, too. Jonas's "perfect" world raises a lot of interesting questions.

Took this book yesterday from the Namaste On King Indian Restaurant OBCZ, Melbourne, Australia - looking forward to reading it soon.

17/05/2007: Finished this little book today and enjoyed it quite a lot. However, I'm not too sure that I would have enjoyed it while I was still in school and can very well imagine the tasks following this read. E.g. What happens to the village after Jonas left? or What did Jonas and Gabe experience when they reach Elsewhere?... definitely many possible stories could evolve from here...
Now I will see what I will do with the book next. If I can't find a meet-up here in Melbourne, I might simply return it to Namaste, to ensure others will enjoy this one as well.

Picked up from meetup last Sunday, but forgot to journal it when I got home :(

An interesting concept, but could have been fleshed out a lot better. More history of the change to Sameness, and continuation of the story in the Elsewhere would have been nice, as well as lots of niggling bits I noticed when I was reading, but I've forgotten now.

Not a bad read though, glad I didn't have to study it, like UbSiA said, I can imagine the assignments for it would have been tedious.
