Geoff Dyer - "One of the best and weirdest novels I have read in a long while. From the first page the reader is gripped. At a time when much so-called "literary" fiction has settled into fulfulling comfortable expectations "The Good Doctor" unsettles and confounds. There are traces of J.M. Coetzee and Graham Greene but Damon Galgut is a true original"

Andre Brink - "A truly remarkable novel, steeped in contemporary history, yet at the same time transcending it. I was enthralled by its intensity and the immediacy of every small twist and turn of the story"

Dermot Healy - "A tremendous brave book. The author never flinches, and makes his hero's dark logic compelling and hair-raising. The dialogue is faultless and the pace perfect. Galgut writes like a man on a long fast night drive through bad places. You're in the front passenger seat but you would rather be in the back. You could get out but you don't. And you see things you would rather forget. It's brilliant."

I personally never really got into this book. That probably has in part to do with the fact I didn't like the main character, he seemed too dispassionate for me. That is, of course, until it was too late to fix the problems surrounding his life. This book left me sad, and wanting to fly to South Africa to shake some sense into the characters.
