To Have and Have Not

I used to be a huge Hemingway fan. Used to be. I think I outgrew him. Anyway, I read this ages ago and remember little about it, except that it bears absolutely no resemblance to the Bogart/Bacall film and I've always wondered how Hemingway allowed that to happen. Here's the publisher's plot description:
"The dramatic story of an honest man who is forced into running contraband between Cuba and Key West as a means of keeping his crumbling family financially afloat. His adventures lead him into the world of the wealthy and dissipated yachtsmen who throng the region, and involve him in a strange and unlikely love affair."

Got this as a surprise RABCK from Watchcat.... thanks! I will read it soon.
Okay, like watchcat I'm not near the huge Hemingway fan I used to be.... a few years ago, when I re-read The Sun Also Rises I remember feeling a huge disappointment - I had the feeling the oh-so-exalted Left Bank "Lost Generation" was just a bunch of rich kids slumming. And reading The Great Gatsby around the same time just reinforced that feeling....
And after seeing how many times Papa used the "n-word" in this book, I don't want to hear anybody ever complain about Mark twain again, ever.
I think I've read enough about bar fights and other such stupid behavior from folks who can't handle their liquor to last a lifetime.

Sending this off as a RABCK to ciloma. Enjoy!
2011-10-20 => This arrived safely in the mail. Thanx for the surprise - I needed it on this gloomy rainy day! Not so sure I want to read it after reading the other comments... maybe when I get to it I will feel different. I haven't read any Hemingway so this being on my wishlist was more curiosity than anything. A side note - the book was purchased from the museum on my birthday.
2022-07-07 => Well, I don't know if this book is indicative of the rest of his writings or not. I found it easy to read. The whole story was really of no interest to me. I did not like the nav-legs (detours) that it took especially towards the end. I found them unnecessary to the story. Will I read another Hemingway? Probably, just because I have it and am curious how a different book will read. Would I go out and seek another book by him? No.
