From the back: On a Creole plantation on the banks of Louisiana's Cane River, four generations of astonishing women battle injustice to unite thier family and forge success on their own terms. They are woment whose lives begin in slavery, who weather the civil War, and who grapple with the contradictions of emancipation through the turbulent early years of the twentieth century....

I really enjoyed this book which is based on the author's genealogical research into her family. She wrote it down as a work of fiction, I believe, so that she could speculate on the emotions and on conversations that are absent in legal the documents that are the basis of such a geneology.

The portraits of how these women lived are disturbing, but the grace, pride and determination that they used to get through it all made for an overall hopeful story. Our book club read this for our January 2005 meeting.

I'm releasing this one to someone who has it on their wish list.
