"A witty modern romance"
I thought this book was wonderful, and I found this person on Amazon appeared to have the same opinion!!

Reviewer: A reader from North-East, England
After spending a couple of months travelling in Oz I was rushing around Sydney looking for a few keep sakes to take home when I remembered the long flight I had to endure to Los Angeles. I asked the girl in the bookshop to pick a witty, romantic, but not too soppy book for the plane journey. She couldn't recommend this book highly enough so I bought it without even reading what it was about, as she seemed to know the type of thing I was looking for. By the time I got off the plane at the other end I felt like hopping back on just to go and thank the girl in the bookshop. I haven't laughed so much at a book in ages. You really feel for the lead character who has had a hard break-up and has ran off to Sydney to start a fresh. The twists in the story are so funny that they keep you wanting to read more and more. Some of the men are just plain weird but the good ones more than make up for the weirdo's. The first page gives such a true reflection of how a lot of us look at these hunky Ozzie blokes who live on a 'ranch', but the lives of the characters are so extreme and bizarre. You feel like screaming at her wanting to let her know about the Perfect man who is right in front of her, but she just doesn't see him. This book not only took me right back to Sydney, but made me quiver with the thought of those hunky Ozzie men!! : )

Journal Entry 4 by Whitreidtan from Matthews, North Carolina USA on Thursday, January 20, 2005
Arrived in my mailbox today. Looks light and fluffy so will hopefully drag me out of my book slump. When I'm finished, I'll ask if there's anyone else who would like a go at it.

I opened this book to start it on Tuesday when I was spending several hours at my children's school as lunch loan mom (I always take a book to read during the down times). Imagine my surprise when the very first sentence contained an erect penis! I slapped it shut and pushed it face down on the table so fast I think I may have left scorch marks on the cover. When I did get back to it at home, I discovered that the penis was merely a paper mache hat worn for a hats party, which was reassuring. It sure did hook me into the book though!

Once over my initial shock, I did mostly enjoy this light romp about Georgia, who left England after she caught her fiance cavorting with a prostitute and headed to Australia, thinking she'd find a man like one in A Town Like Alice. Obviously Georgia is a naive character in some ways but the party, drinking, and drugs crowd she falls into, partly because of her job at the fashion magazine Glow and partly because they are the people she most feels comfortable with, show her to be not quite so naive as all that. Georgia really does grow and mature over the course of the book, even while chasing down the wrong path several times as well as watching those around her go down dangerous and ultimately life-threatening paths. But in helping them out of the holes they are in, she comes to some realizations about herself that make her more than just a flighty party girl looking for some love in her life.

I will admit I was uncomfortable with the lifestyle that everyone in this book seems to lead, that of excess and boredom, but despite feeling disapproving of the characters' choices, I rather liked them and their flamboyant personalities even though I'd never want to spend too much time with them in real life.

The ending of the book was quite quick and wrapped up neatly, as expected, but I would have liked more. All in all, a good, entertaining read and I enjoyed it.

Sending off to two more people in an effort to expand the ray a bit.

Journal Entry 7 by JMT60201 from Evanston, Illinois USA on Thursday, March 3, 2005
This was generously sent to me by a book group member. Now that I have it, I'm not in a chick-lit kinda mood, so I'm sending it to the next person on the list, hoping she will be ready for a nice light reading experience.
