Another in the Roderick Alleyn series.

From the inside cover:
The first play performed in the newly restored theatre was inspired by a child's glove found in a secret drawer of an old Victorian hand-desk. But it was a far from ordinary glove and its discovery was to lead to a hideous death. The murder weapon: "a bronze dolphin grinning away for all it was worth through a wet, unspeakable mask."

Somewhere in the theatre group was a killer, and it fell to the ubiquitous Superintendent Alleyn of Scotland Yard to cull the clues, draw up the hypotheses, and pint his finger at the right person.

**Note: My copy is an ancient hardback; the cover art does not match the one shown here.**

Another interesting note: When I got this I noticed it was stamped "Patient's Library, MO. State Chest Hospital, Mt. Vernon, MO." As I was reading I came to this stamped on the bottom of page 37, "Please do not cough on this book nor moisten fingers with mouth to turn pages." Eck. I'm glad this book is older than I am and all germs that might have lurked in the pages are surely gone. (I still washed my hands though...)

For some reason I didn't find this as compelling as others in the series. I'm not sure why but it just didn't seem to grab me. It, as many of Marsh's novels, had several twists and turns to be navigated but I didn't get caught up in the mystery as I usually do.

I'm keeping this in my permanent collection as I think someone who catches it in the wild might be "freaked out" by the State Chest Hospital's warning stamps. I will consider loaning this out to BCers I know well.
