This first volume in Dirk Bogard's funny, sad, anecdotal and quite exceptionally well-written autobiography was an immediate best seller.
A most enviable piece of pastoral recall, nostalgic to the point of being aromatic with the smells, colours, sounds, characters of English pre-war rural life.
Alexander Walker.
I have read all of Dirk Bogard's books with great enjoyment. I wrote to him once to say how much , to my surprise received a reply.

He has great style as an author - a pity there will be no further books written by him.
