I found it a wonderful book and admired Susie's crazy determination to fulfil her plan to walk from La Rochelle to Geneva inspiring. I think that, once my feet were a rotting mass of blisters, swathed in bandages and causing pain at every tottering step, I should have given up! But Susie struggled on and had a truly memorable experience.
Lying in her tiny, leaking and condensation filled tent night after freezing night, she committed the day's experiences to her little recorder and brought them home to share with us in this book.
Perhaps, as the many French people she encountered on her route felt, you have to be full of English eccentricity to even embark on such a walk. However, I think that anyone who loves France will thoroughly enjoy this book and finish it with a sincere admiration for its doughty author.

Arrived today safe and sound. Thanks!
What a wonderful journey! I honestly became inspired to start getting myself in shape to do a walking adventure of my own. Not that I hope to accomplish a trip exactly like she did (I will pack far smarter!) but there are loads of walking tours out there that have always interested me and I think I'll give one a go.
Part of me wanted to yell at Susie, "What are you thinking woman? You don't need all that stuff!" Then there were times where I got caught up in the beautiful scenery, the adventure, the good people she met along her journey.
The only reason I didn't give it a 10 was that the last chapter or two seemed rushed in order to end the book. I would have gladly kept reading step by step to learn more about what she got herself into.
I'll be giving this book to my mom to read next on Friday (4/13/2007) as she'll be heading to Europe on her own adventure (Rick Steves: Europe Through the Back Door tour) and I think she'll get a kick out of the book. If she finishes in time, I'll have her leave it somewhere in her travels.
