The Armageddon Inheritance

Second in a three-book series. I read the third book without knowing about the other two (it's a sign of a good book that it can stand alone without its predecessors). Saw this book in a used bookstore yesterday while browsing for this author.
Good, fast-paced, read. There's some exploration of the tensions between first-world and third-world nations on Earth as the unified military command prepares the world against an alien force bent on genocide. Lightly touches on the metaphysics of machines developing souls.
