From the book back:
"The Swallows of Kabul is a fiercely written account of life under a fascist theocracy. Set in Kabul under the rule of the Taliban, the third-person narrative follows the stories of two couples: Mohsen, the scion of a family of successful businessmen ruined first by the war against the Russians and then by the Taliban's harsh laws, and his wife, Zunaira, an intelligent, educated, beautiful woman whose teaching career ended with the Taliban's ascendancy; Atiq, a veteran of the Russian war, now a part-time jailer whose position requires him to watch over prisoners condemned to death, and Atiq's wife, Musarrat, who nursed him back to health after he was wounded in the war and now has been stricken by disease.

"Opening with the horrifying scene of a woman being buried up to her neck and then stoned to death, the reader follows these four as their lives become terrifyingly entwined in a city where the destruction of human relations and self-respect have become palpable. Written with brilliant economy, The Swallows of Kabul is an utterly compelling story that exposes the distinct differences between religiosity and extremism.

"Yasmina Khadra is a nom de plume of the Algerian army officer Mohamed Moulessehoul, who is author of two other books published in English: In the Name of God and Wolf Dreams. He took the feminine pseudonym to avoid submitting his manuscripts for approval by military censors while he was still in the army. He is now retired and living in France."

I located and bought this book based upon an interview with the author on NPR.
