Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader
6 journalers for this copy...
Wonderful, sharp, funny essays on books and writing. I may need to reread this before I give it away.
I reread it. It was just as wonderful as I remembered. :-)
Release planned for Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at Meet Up at Cafe Mozart, 600 Davis Street in Evanston, Illinois USA.
I plan to bring this to the Meetup Tuesday night at 7.

Thanks, Rampallion.
I wondered if this was Clifton Fadiman's daughter, and yes, she is.
I have been attracted by "The Joy of Sesquipedalians" and the tale of Wally the Wordworm (told by Clifton). "we viewed all forms of intellectual copmpetition as a scarament, a kin of holy water ... to be slathered on at every opportunity with the largest possible aspergill." What a mouthful!
And I see we were not the only ones to gather round and watch the G.E. College Bowl! Except this family formed itself up in teams.
I love it!

I loved these essays which apparently first appeared in "Civilization", a magazine she was involved with which was published by the Library of Congress.
This lingered on the shelf for a long time. O had thought it was a year or so but it looks like for four or five years. But about a month ago I picked it back up and had trouble putting it down. As a fellow compulsive proofreader (it’s a sickness, we all know this) I just had to laugh at her acknowledgements where she had to admit that she apparently wasn’t as good a proofreader as she had tried to show that she was in an earlier essay.
I would have loved to have been able to have shared so much of this book with my father. He would have loved it too.
She talks lovingly of her own father and watching College Bowl as a family. We, too, had watched the show regularly. It was probably a fairly small audience.

I plan to read and release this while on vacation.
I mailed this to an avid reader, my friend Sarah. I really enjoyed this book and felt I should share it with her. She's the former owner of the Deliberate Literate Bookstore in Memphis and sure to get a kick out of it. Enjoy!
My husband is in a writers' critique group with Sarah who knew I am a bookcrosser, so Sarah gave it to my husband for me to journal. How fun -- this is actually the first catch I've made other than mailing books to paperbackswap.com members who are bookcrossers!
Looks like a fun read.

This looks like the perfect book for any bookcrosser and I see it's been around a bit - looking forward to reading it :)

Great book! If you love (physical) books or love to read or both you will relate to much of the topics in this book. Written in a rather witty style, the author touched on subjects dear to my heart such as arranging books in your library, using bookmarks, proofreading, writing in books, used books - I thought every chapter was fascinating.
Sending this to KathyB who won it in a swap on Bookobsessed - enjoy!
