Life in what was once the United States has become a sexually repressed exisitence in the Republic of Gilead, an intolerant theocracy founded by religious extremists. In a land where today's rhetoric has become tomorrow's reality, a still young woman recalls her old life in teh 1980s, and describes her new identity as a Handmaid, enlisted to bear children for the elite.
A fabulous, chilling book

Scarey concept, a few of the justification for suspension of freedoms are chillingly similar to some situations today.
