Zoo City is the festering slum where the criminal underclass and their animal companions reside. Criminals are condemned to live with their animals, never to leave the house without them and also to take good care of them. If an animal dies, the owner is somehow swallowed by magic and annihilated.

As original this idea might be; I didn't feel comfortable with it. Since these animals are not pets like cats or dogs, but wild beasts as tigers, bears, snakes, alligators which belong into the wilderness, not into urban jungles where they are mistreated by their criminal owners.
The story follows the ambitioned girl Zinzi who is "animalized" by a sloth. She lives from internet scams and her talent to find lost things. Being hired by a reclusive music producer to find a missing pop star should be her ticket out of Zoo City - instead it catapults Zinzi only deeper into the maw of a city twisted by crime and magic ...
