Stephenson's Cryptonomicon is a brilliant mix of cyberpunk technothriller and historical fiction filled with great characters and ideas. This is, quite simply, my favorite book of the past several years. I've read it twice since it was first released and even purchased a more portable trade paperback copy (which is why I've decided to send this copy out into the world).

This is a hardback copy in excellent condition. Treat it well, read it, and please pass it on to someone who will do the same.

This book is going to start its journey via a (so far very short) book ray. Please PM me if you would like to be added to the ray. Once you receive the book, please add a journal entry, read it, and release it to the next person in the ray (PM them for shipping info). Here's the list so far:

dallasjay (California, USA)
Megi53 (Viginia, USA) <-- received
caligula03 (California, USA)
Gerenggat (England, UK - prefer to ship in Europe)
jubby (New South Wales, Australia - can ship internationally)

It looks like a very nuanced and rich story. Can't wait to start reading it. I'm glad it arrived on a Friday!

I'm just going to have to buy a copy of this book! It's so fascinatingly detailed and wonderful. Bobby Shaftoe is one of my all-time favorite characters, from his evocative name to his mystical giant lizard sighting to his USMC toughness!

The plot line about how computers came to be is amazing and even understandable for a math-o-phobe like myself.

My Dad will love this book, so I'll give my new copy to him and finish reading it (I only got to the Norwegian shipwreck scene before 5 other bookrings arrived.) when I visit him in San Antonio during the holidays.

Mailing on to caligula03 today.

I am enjoying the book thoroughly but it's taking me a long time to read it. The story is very densely written. I hope to finish it by this weekend. Thank you for your patience. :)

Journal Entry 8 by caligula03 from Hayward, California USA on Sunday, December 5, 2004
I'm at the half way point and the book is becoming more and more of a chore to read. There are too many characters and most of them I just don't find interesting enough to care about. The Waterhouses past and present are the two most interesting characters. Had the book just stuck with them it would have been a fast and fun read.

I'm awaiting an address from the next in line.
