Ah... I love Becky Chambers SO MUCH! This is the second book in her Wayfarers series, a follow on to The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. I greatly enjoyed this one! The cast of characters in this novel is smaller than in the first book, and initially I missed the larger ensemble cast. But then I settled in and was able to really enjoy spending time with just this handful of characters. I found the ending of this book particularly strong, too. I will definitely be reading on in this series! Love, love, love it.

Another stellar interpersonal story by Chambers. There were even more tears with this one. (I enjoyed Book 1 more despite the emotion here.) There are these tiny little moments that she writes that just surprise me in the most wonderful ways.

Book 2 starts where Book 1 left off. But you don't get to follow the adventures of the original crew. And even though this story is great, I did miss the other characters. I wanted to continue on with them.

This book wasn't episodic like the first one. There are 2 storylines that parallel from different points in time to meet up near the end. We get to see where they started, their struggle to find their place and purpose in the universe, and find their strength together and as individuals. There are a lot of wonderful themes in both books, but I'll let you explore them on your own.

Even though there is drama in the story, it doesn't feel big or the main focus. It was personal struggles to overcome, not culture/social/etc changes, revolutions, or whatnot. If Chambers ever took her way with writing great characters and their interpersonal relationships and had them fighting the fight or whatever, wow, that would be something of a powerful story. As it is, her stories are wonderful, if on a bit of a quieter side. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! I am a fan!

Wow! Thank you very much. I came back home from a fabulous weekend at the Dance Flurry festival to find a mailbox stuffed to the gills with 2 generous packages of books & treats. I look forward to checking out this new (at least to me) series.
