I found this book at a thrift store in Appleton, WI. I previously had read one other book by John Lescroart and ejoyed it. When I saw this one was part of the same series, I decided to grab it.

San Francisco Police Lt. Abe Glitsky and defense attorney Dismas Hardy join forces to investigate the murder of a local shop owner who was the best friend of Glitsky's father. The police are convinced that Hardy's friend and client John Holiday, along with two of his acquaintances, are the killers. As Hardy and Glitsky delve into the crime, the bodies begin to pile up and no matter what evidence the two come up with, key members of the investigation do not believe them. A private security firm with some questionable employees seem to be behind all of the deaths but there are those in the police department who will stop at nothing to protect them. After the killers threaten Hardy's and Glitsky's families, the two know that "the first law" is to do whatever it takes to protect themselves and their families.
