Aussie Shelley Burr has produced an unputdownable thriller with WAKE. This is a wonderfully atmospheric crime novel with a great sense of location, the sweltering and inescapable heat, the dense scrubland, the isolation and all its dangers. This is a character driven story of people, buried secrets, lies and deceptions and family life in remote small town communities. An allround gripping read.

A fabulous debut novel by Shelley Burr. Set in the small fictional town of Nannine in outback NSW. Once a thriving farming community, the years of punishing drought have now whittled it down to a pub, a general store and a police station. It’s only claim to fame is the still unsolved disappearance of Evelyn McCreery 19 years ago from the bedroom she shared with her twin sister, Mina. Mina’s life has been defined by the intense interest in her sister’s disappearance and almost lives as a recluse on the family destocked sheep farm. Lane Holland, a private investigator has earned a living solving cold cases, and has come to town with his eye on the unclaimed reward money, but he also has an ulterior motive for wanting to solve this case. A great read, you can really feel the heat, and the openness of the bush. Unnputdownable.
