This is my first book by Candice Fox. It was given to me by one of my husband’s customers. When I started it, I did not realize that it was third in the series. It can be read without reading the other books but there is some of the background that isn’t fully explained. The story begins with four families having dinner at the White Caps Hotel while their sons are upstairs. The parents check on them about every hour. The midnight check falls on Sara Farrow and she finds her eight-year-old son, Richard, missing in spite of the other three boys swearing no one left the room. Police Chief Damien Clark is not pleased when the mother, Sara, insists on hiring PI Ted Conkaffey and his partner, Amanda Pharrell. This is the weekTed is granted a week-long visitation of his almost-two-year-old daughter. In the background story, Ted was cleared of being a pedophile.

The story is well written, and Fox knows how to invoke emotion and inner character that translate into the reader.

Gone by Midnight was a great mystery/thriller. Four families are on vacation together. The parents go downstairs for dinner and leave their boys upstairs, in one of the bedrooms. When checking in on the boys, it was discovered that one of the boys, Richie, has gone missing.

With a cast of eclectic characters, Candice Fox keeps the reader engaged and guessing what happened to Richie.
