Humour or memoir ... anyway they are funny, and I've met DS in person, he has funny bones! Just working my way through his back catalogue.

6/01/23 - Now that I’ve met Sedaris in person (a book signing in Salford) and seen his show twice, I feel that I know him! This is an earlier book, after his breakthrough ’Me Talk Pretty …’, only obvious because of the age and circumstances of Sedaris and his family. For example, his father and sister Tiffany are still alive, and they haven’t yet bought the beach house on the Emerald Isle (North Carolina). Other then these signposts it is his regular mixed bag of memoir, comic writing, with hints of social commentary. But I don’t think DS thinks too much about the timeline or book’s arc, I think he lives, observes, remembers, and writes, like breathing, and is naturally funny with it. It’s a testament to his style that I finished the book with an overall feeling of being entertained, but can recall very few of the separate essays and events. ps. there is no specific mention of denim or corduroy in the book, but the cover picture of a nude doll relates to the disappointment that his baby brother Paul wasn’t a girlie toy for him and his sisters to play with (I think).
