This is one of Anne Tyler's earlier books (1965) about a family's grief process after the death of their six-year-old daughter in a freak accident. Frankly, I think she's improved with age -- these early stories all seem similar -- populated by the same types of characters (folks who don't communicate very well) and not having much action. In this one, at least, several of the characters seem to finally come to some degree of self-understanding.
