I found this paperback in this Little Free Library in Concord MA near a huge old tree behind the farmhouse where Thoreau was born, and nabbed it for another release copy.

I read and enjoyed Lewis' "Narnia" series long, long ago, and while some aspects of it haven't held up as well as others, I still remember it fondly.

This story starts out with the four Pevensie kids returning to Narnia, only to find that time passes at a very different speed there than in their world. They eventually come to the aid of Prince Caspian, the rightful heir to the throne, in his battle against an unscrupulous rival. More battles ensue before things are resolved - at least until the next book, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which is perhaps my favorite of the whole series. [Caspian makes another appearance in that book, btw, so this is a good introduction.]

Among my favorite parts of this story: the bafflement of the kids when they first return to Narnia, and the shock when they figure out just how long it's been; and the introduction of Reepicheep, the "gay and martial mouse", as touchy about points of honor as any cavalier in history. Oh, and at one point there's a marvelous celebration, in which Silenus and Bacchus and their crowd of maenads make an appearance - rather heady stuff...

[Note: the 2008 film version takes quite a few liberties with the story, most of them minor, but a few - Caspian's role vs. Peter's, the course of the battles (and the focus - in the book they generally happen off-stage), the hints of flirtation between Caspian and Susan - struck sour notes for me. Still, it's a handsome film.]

There's a TV Tropes page for the book and film, quite entertaining - but do beware of spoilers if you haven't read the book yet.
