This book does exactly what it says on the cover. It describes the living conditions, the work and the food of men in a Siberian gulag, from the time they are wakened at 5am, until they go back to bed, exhausted, at night.
For all this it is not a depressing novel. We hear the reasoning of the men and come to understand how they can cope with conditions I think I would find unbearable. The end is even uplifting.
