Maigret, the laconic detective is taken from grimy bars to luxury hotels as he traces the true identity of Pietr the Latvian in this the first of Simenon's novels in a series of over 70 books.
Very atmospheric tale quickly bringing to mind the tv series starring Michael Gambon and also the later series with Rowan Atkinson. A lot of folk didn't like that second one, being so used to Atkinson in comedy roles but I really enjoyed it. Keeping a look out for more books in the series.
